South Carolina Heritage Cooridor
The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor extends 240 miles across South Carolina, stretching from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1996 as one of a select number of National Heritage Areas -- the 14 counties of the corridor offer a cross-section of the state's history, culture, and natural landscapes.

This website is dedicated to the National Historic Landmarks program, established to identify and protect places possessing exceptional value in illustrating the nation's heritage. Only 3 percent of the properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places are designated as National Historic Landmarks, including 15 sites on this Charleston itinerary.
Jenkins' Orphanage Band
The Jenkins' Orphanage was located in the Old Marine Hospital from 1895 to 1939. To raise funds for the orphanage, this band was organized in 1895, and their music linked ragtime, march and jazz. This site also has information on African American education.
